Accessibility
Atom Budget should work for everyone who needs it, including people who use a screen reader, navigate by keyboard, need larger text, or find movement on screen uncomfortable. This page says what we aim for, what we have done, where we know we fall short, and how to tell us when something gets in your way.
What we aim for
We build against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, version 2.1, at Level AA. That is the standard most people mean when they talk about an accessible website.
We are not going to tell you we meet it everywhere, because we cannot honestly verify that. The guidelines run to about fifty criteria, several of them a matter of judgement rather than a plain pass or fail, and automated checking only catches a portion of them. The app also changes most weeks, and we test on a handful of browsers and screen readers rather than every combination people use.
What we can tell you is that we test against the standard, we fix what we find, and we fix what you report.
What we have done
- Everything you can click can also be reached and operated with a keyboard alone. Controls that behaved like buttons but were not buttons have been corrected, so nothing is mouse-only.
- Buttons that show only an icon carry a name that a screen reader announces, including the paycheck bars on the home page, which read out the income, the date, and what is left to spend.
- A skip link at the top of every page in the app jumps straight to the content, so you do not have to tab through the whole sidebar to reach it.
- Text colors are checked against the contrast the standard asks for, in both the light and dark themes, and several were darkened when they came up short.
- If your device is set to reduce motion, we honour it. Animations stop, and the moving background on our home page holds still.
- Every form field has a label, and the app works at the text size your browser is set to.
Where we fall short
Naming these is more useful to you than pretending they are not there.
- On the home page, hovering a paycheck bar opens a small panel breaking down where that money goes. That panel does not open when you reach the bar with a keyboard. The same figures are announced by screen readers, and the full breakdown is one click away, but the panel itself is currently mouse-only.
- Our color contrast figures were worked out by hand rather than with automated tooling, so a value here or there may sit closer to the line than we think.
- We have not tested against every combination of screen reader, browser, and operating system. If yours behaves differently from what is written here, we would genuinely like to know.
- Our phone app has had less accessibility scrutiny than the web app so far.
Tell us when something blocks you
If anything in Atom Budget stops you from doing what you came to do, that is a bug and we want to hear about it. You do not need to know the technical name for the problem. Telling us what you were trying to do, what happened, and what you use to browse is plenty.
Write to accessibility@atombudget.com. We answer within three business days, and we will tell you what we can do and roughly when. If it is something we cannot fix quickly, we will say so rather than leave you waiting.
